How Do I Locate My Counselor Board’s CE Provider Requirements? – Second Question
In the article I wrote earlier I dealt with, “What are the CE requirements for my license?”, particularly for licensed counselors. This article will seek to answer the question, “Where can I locate my state board’s approved provider criteria?”, also pertaining to those licensed as counselors. In answering this question you will be able to determine where to go to fulfill your CE requirements. The first step, again, is finding out what governing board expects of you (the licensee), the second thing is you need to know what is allowed regarding the CE providers.
All state boards don’t hold to the same criteria for how they arrive at what makes an acceptable CE provider. Equipping yourself with the knowledge of your state’s specific criteria will help you narrow the scope of your search. Prior to discussing where to find the answer to this second question, let’s consider the three variations of what is considered an acceptable CE provider.
There are some states where the board requires the CE provider to apply for approval from them specifically. Providers will then have a unique provider number issued by the board of that state. For example, for Ohio counselors, you must obtain your CE from a Counselor, Social Worker and Marriage and Family Therapist Board of Ohio approved provider who has a valid RCX#. If your state falls into this category, Solicit for the provider number granted by your state board from each CE provider you investigate.
Some counselor state boards will honor continuing education earned from national board approved providers. For example, in Minnesota, a Professional Counselor can earn CE from a National Board for Certified Counselors (NBCC) approved provider. This national approval will be in lieu of receiving approval directly from the state board. It is one or the other, but does not have to be both.
Some states will honor continuing education courses offered by providers who have been pre-approved by a equivalent board in another state. To illustrate, Professional Counselors in Colorado can earn continuing education from a provider who has received approval in California from the BBS, due to the fact that LPCCs in California are under the regulation of the BBS. This explains the various approvals accepted by the different state boards, however, where do you go to find out what your state board allows?
You should start at the website of your own state board. On their website will be a link titled something like “Rules and Regulations”, “Statutes”, “Laws and Rules”, etc. Once you have found the document with the board’s rules for counselors, find the section on continuing education. Within this section will be a description on what the board views as acceptable venues for acquiring your CE. Those that are licensed as a counselor in Pennsylvania, be searching for the section labeled “Pre-approved providers of continuing education courses and programs for professional counselors”. This area will tell you which scenario described above your state board falls into (accepting a nationally approved provider, a provider approved in another state, or one that is approved by them only).
Now you are ready to actually begin your search for the right provider, having obtained this other knowledge . This information will make things easier going forward. Make sure that CE provider states clearly which approvals they have been granted. If you are having a difficult time finding this information, and you can’t reach them to inquire about it, research a different provider.
