The Possible Damage Smoking During Pregnancy Can Cause For Your Child
Many women know that smoking while pregnant puts their unborn child at risk. They may not know, however, the full extent of that risk. There is a long list of possible consequences for a child whose mother smokes while pregnant. Not only that, but even inhaling second hand smoke will have negative effects on a fetus. It’s no longer just about protecting yourself but also protecting your unborn child. You can find many safe methods to quit smoking and if you’re not supported at home, there are support systems in place. Your child can suffer from the following effects if you smoke while pregnant.
One of the known worst case consequences from smoking during pregnancy is death for the child. SIDS is more common in children exposed to the dangers of second hand smoke. SIDS is the death of a child less than one year of age with no apparent cause of death. This is an extremely serious risk to take with your child as a pregnant mother. We tend to feel that education and awareness can go a long way and if more smoking mothers were aware of the dangers, more of them would quit smoking. Low birth weight is a common problem caused by smoking during pregnancy which can cause other issues too. This complication is noted in more than 20 percent of all births nationwide. A increased risk for preterm delivery is also attributed to smoking during pregnancy. It has been said that more than 14% of preterm labors are as a result of the mothers addiction to cigarettes. 10 percent of all infant mortality cases including SIDS can be attributed to smoking during pregnancy. Even the ALA agrees with this statistic.
The immediate, physical consequences of smoking while pregnant is naturally the focus. However, there is more evidence accumulating that suggests a correlation to negative effects more evident in behavioral difficulties. This can include learning disabilities and general behavioral issues with the child. There is no getting around that smoking during pregnancy has terrible consequences for the baby. You aren’t giving your child a fair chance to decide what they put into their bodies, instead you are thrusting smoke upon them. Also, consider that nicotine is also present in mother’s milk, and there is no let-up for the baby. It’s ultra important for you to quit and we hope to have given you the motivation to do so. Discuss quitting with your physician he’ll have some great advice.

Excerpt: Malalai Kakar (1967 28 September 2008) was the most high-profile policewoman in Afghanistan after the ousting of the Taliban in 2001 . A Lieutenant Colonel, she was the head of Kandahar’s department of crimes against women. Kakar, who received numerous death threats, was assassinated by the Taliban on September 28, 2008. She was shot dead between 7:00am and 8:00am in her car outside of her house while on the way to work. When Kakar was killed she was reported to be either in her late 30s or early to mid 40s and had 6 children. Kakar joined the police force in 1982, following in the footsteps of her father and brothers. She was the first woman to graduate from the Kandahar Police Academy, and the first to become an investigator with the Kandahar Police Department. The fate of Malalai Kakar illustrates the intricacies of gender issues in law enforcement in Afghanistan. Female Afghan police offiers leave their homes hidden by a burqa, to don a police uniform and weapon at the police station to do their job.
