CCTV Secrets that Security Companies don’t want Published
Most electronic security installation businesses have ignored IP CCTV. They have underestimated the benefits of IP CCTV and have continued to sell analogue technology as the only workable CCTV solution. This article dispels the myths surrounding Analogue CCTV versus IP CCTV.
What is IP CCTV?
IP CCTV (internet protocol closed circuit television) is a method of transmitting and recording images and converting this into data which is then transmitted over a network and/or internet.
How does Analogue CCTV differ from IP CCTV?
Analogue CCTV is well established in the security industry. As a result, most electronic security engineers tend to have a better understanding of this technology. Analogue CCTV has always been regarded as a secure method of capturing images. IP CCTV is more configurable which means information is easily relayed/repeated, greater distances can be covered and there tends to be more product choice. Because of the ease of configuration, IP CCTV can be encoded to make it more secure than Analogue CCTV.
Benefits of IP CCTV
IP has some very nice benefits. For example, analytics are starting to become a standard no cost option in IP cameras and IP CCTV. Mega pixels imaging with facilities to zoom into sections of the image scene is also common place. ConveIPntion lens application devices and integral lens units are available to cater for every conceivable application with multiple solutions.
What is PoIP?
Power over IP (PoIP) is fast becoming the norm for camera powering. The technical term for this is PoE (power over Ethernet). It means that power is carried over the same cable so a separate cable/power supply is not required for the camera. PoIP has the benefit of making the installation cheaper and quicker.
What type of IP CCTV products are available?
A large number of suppliers are making their IP products multi brand supportive and the old ‘licence per camera’ pricing structure is no longer a stumbling block on most middle range systems (although the larger type of systems still use this function). It is not uncommon now to get off the shelf 32 channel Network Video Recorder (NVR) with open platform integrated remote view, multi simultaneous operation, network auto backup, Pan Tilt Zoom (PTZ) control, auto tour per camera, alarm run pattern, image scan on alarm, image tracking, full audio recording etc all in one single unit.
Why does my existing security company want me to install analogue CCTV?
Most security businesses have failed to understand the IP market and underestimated its benefits, perceiving it as useful only for the DIY cameral system market. Security engineers in these businesses are not trained in the installation and use of IP CCTV systems and it is cheaper to continue to install existing analogue CCTV systems.
Should I change from Analogue CCTV from IP CCTV?
The simple answer is no. Just because IP has arrived there is no need to start all over again. Hybrid solutions that will integrate Analogue with IP is a sensible step to take and will ensure that you can take advantage of the best of both worlds. You can continue to use your existing assets while taking advantage of newer technology. In the short term, you will still have the option to take analogue upgrades and additions to existing systems.
Can Analogue CCTV still be integrated with other fire and security systems?
More and more systems (alarm systems, access control etc) have IP integration built in and there are a number of manufacturers offering 1 volt peak to peak (1VP-P) to IP encoders to allow standard analogue cameras to be connected to IP networks and/or NVRs. A large number of manufacturers are providing single box solutions. These give the benefit of a network video recorder (NVR) that is completely stand alone and requires no other control equipment. NVR with built in touch screen for a complete one box solution are becoming more common and offer a very neat solution with all the modern analytics, recording and viewing all in one package. Camera compatibility is also starting to push its way through.
I need a new CCTV system. What should I choose?
You can still have analogue but with IP CCTV there are more options and better functionality and integration with existing systems. For complete new installations,
IP would be the most sensible solution to explore. Analogue CCTV still has a very strong place in the market, but IP is going to be the way forward. Some major CCTV developers have now stopped development work on analogue products and are solely concentrating on IP.
Is there any difference in price between analogue and IP CCTV?
Lower quality cameras are much cheaper in analogue but are more expensive on cabling and installation. Although IP CCTV tends to be more costly, the installation is cheaper. investing in IP CCTV means an investment in future technology and infrastructure. Generally speaking, the difference in cost of the IP CCTV equipment may be marginally more expensive but this is balanced out by the cost of the installation.
Installation of CCTV
Ministry of Justice guidelines mean CCTV images need to meet certain criteria for legal evidence purposes. It is recommended that you use a fully trained and experienced engineer for CCTV installations. CCTV works differently from photography; an understanding of the optical side of CCTV (for example an engineer will understand why a 12mm lens may be sufficient for identification purposes but may not give the angle of view required) demonstrates that CCTV installation requires specialist installation.
Conclusion
• There is no real difference in cost between Analogue and IP CCTV equipment and installation packages (if you are quoted more for IP CCTV look elsewhere)
• IP CCTV is undoubtedly the future of CCTV but don’t be persuaded into buying different technology if your existing system can be integrated into IP systems.
• If you need a complete new installation, choose IP CCTV
• Always use qualified and experienced engineers to install your CCTV systems if you need the images for legal reasons
