An analysis of the relationship between high school principals’ perception of teacher leadership behaviors and school performance. $49.99 The purpose of this study was to determine if a relationship existed between leadership behaviors of teachers as perceived by principals and school performance as measured by the Valence Index of Performance (VIP) score (Edwards, 2007). An explanatory mixed methodology study was utilized to address the research questions. A researcher developed survey instrument, the Principals’ Perception of Teacher Leadership (PPTL), was designed, tested through a pilot study, and distributed electronically to 520 Texas public high school principals. Principals from 105 schools participated in the study. Upon collection of the PPTL, three participating principals were selected for a brief explanatory case study to validate and aid explanation of PPTL data. The data obtained through the explanatory case study supported the existence of teacher leadership on the three campuses and the interviews produced narrative that supported the theory that teacher leadership does influence school performance.;Academic Excellence Indicator System (AEIS) data was retrieved from the Texas Education Agency website and a principal axis factoring analysis of nine performance indicators formed the VIP score (Edwards, 2007). A multiple regression analysis of the quantitative data failed to find a statistically significant relationship between the teacher leadership behaviors and school performance, nor was there a relationship found for the combined teacher leadership behaviors as measured by the PPTL and school performance as measure by the VIP. The Qualitative results of this study suggested that teacher leadership is a promising practice for high schools and that more empirical research should be conducted in the area of teacher leadership and school performance. |

Embracing the math crisis: The impact of learning communities on student achievement and teaching practices in algebra I classrooms in a large urban school. $69 Increasing mathematics scores in the state of Texas is an ongoing challenge for teachers and administrators. In order to address and solve this problem, one urban high school embraced the Professional Learning Community model. Several activities such as collaborative teaming, common assessments, shared mission, and analysis of data were implemented by the algebra I teachers at this very large, diverse high school. The purpose for this study was to examine how, and to what extent the implementation of professional learning communities improved student academic performance in mathematics and impacted the teaching practices of algebra I teachers. Because the groups were not selected at random and the groups consisted of a control group and an experimental group, this quasi-experimental study took the form of a nonequivalent control-group design. First and foremost, archival data including algebra I test scores from the 2007 school year was obtained from four high schools in the district. One of the high schools implemented the professional learning community model in the algebra I classrooms, and the other three high schools in the same district did not use those strategies. Using SPSS software, the results of an analysis of variance (ANOVA) were used to conclude whether or not professional learning community activities impacted algebra I scores and impacted teaching practices in these classrooms. The findings revealed: (1) the teaching practices observation instrument can be used to determine the extent teachers implemented the professional learning community activities, (2) an analysis of student test scores determined and supported the results that there was no significant impact on academic performance of minority students or teaching practices in the large, urban school, and (3) the findings of this study provided information necessary to campus and district level administrators as to whether or not the professional learning community model impacted test |

But young Watson was immediately attracted to the sound of the guitar, in particular the electric guitar as practiced by the "axe men" of Texas: T-Bone Walker and Clarence "Gatemouth" Brown.
